A NFL cheerleader was arrested after allegations of sexual assault

Sarah Jones has been indicted for having a sexual relationship with a high school student

She has taken time off from teaching due to “personal reasons” I could only imagine what they are

The NFL off-season has been full of intriguing storylines, Peyton signing with Denver, Tebow traded to the Jets, the Bounty system in New Orleans and we’re still weeks away from Draft night. It’s not too surprising to see that this story has been somewhat buried in the NFL headlines but a member of the Cincinnati Bengals is in the papers for the wrong reasons. I am glad to say that it wasn’t Cedric Benson getting pulled over for another DUI or Jerome Simpson selling high grade marijuana by the pound through the mail. Then Bengals have had more player arrests since 2000 than any other NFL team but this time it was a Ben-Gal cheerleader who found herself in some new silver bracelets.

Her name is Sarah Jones and I’m not talking about Detective Rebecca Madsen from Alcatraz. I’m talking about the Sarah Jones who has been a Ben-Gal for over 5 years and served as the team’s captain during the 2011 season. This isn’t the first time that the former high school teacher from Kentucky has been in the media. Jones has been battling online gossip website for libel but we’ll get to that later. Jones was arrested on Thursday after being indicted on allegations of a sexual relationship with a student.

Jones was a high school English and math teacher at Dixie Heights High School in Edgewood, Kentucky. The 26 year old is alleged to have had sex with a 16 year old boy at least five times in her apartment. She was in contact with that young man, who happened to be a football player, through text message and the two had an elaborate relationship spanning over months of time. She now faces charges of first-degree sexual abuse and unlawful use of electronic means to induce a minor to engage in sexual or other prohibited acts. In walks Chris Hansen with Dateline NBC.

It seems as if the Edgewood Police Department were well aware of Miss Jones’ relationship and began investigating them last November. Police Chief Anthony Kramer told reporters that they “were made aware of allegations of inappropriate relations between a teacher and an underage student at the school. We have been conducting an investigation since that time.” Since that investigation was launched Jones has been a former teacher stepping down for personal reasons on November 30th. The two charges against Jones are felonies and can carry up to five years in prison for each charge if she is found guilty.

The Kenton County grand jury believed that there was enough evidence to indict Sarah Jones but they also indicted the woman’s mother. Cheryl Jones is a principal at another school in the same district that Sarah used to work with. The grand jury indicted Cheryl with a charge of tampering with physical evidence related to Sarah’s case which is also a felony and punishable by up to five years in prison. Sarah Jones posted a cash bond of $50,000 and her mother Cheryl posted $30,000 and are to be arraigned in court April 2 before Kenton Circuit Judge Patricia Summe. The Jones’ lawyer, Charles Lester Jr., represented by Eric Deters law firm, made a quick statement saying that “Sarah has maintained her innocence. The indictment of her mother is completely baseless . . . Cheryl Jones did not tamper with evidence.”

Sarah Jones’ lawyer Eric Deters was singing a similar song in December when he made comments about the case on his weekly radio segment. “Sarah denies it completely” Deters proclaimed that the “victim” even denies the allegations and isn’t cooperating. Deters even said that the “victim and his parents are upset Sarah is having to go through this” explaining that those circumstances are “not usually the case in these situations.” The Bengals made a statement saying that “the club is aware of the situation, and it’s an ongoing process to collect the information that can guide appropriate acts as warranted.” He continued to explain that tryouts and auditions for the 2012 squad haven’t started yet and “at this time, we are guided by our general policy that it’s not appropriate to comment on legal matters yet to be resolved.” Sounds like a statement from a team that’s been through this type of situation before, I guess practice does make perfect.

This isn’t Sarah Jones’ first nationally followed court case, as the young woman is still part of an ongoing lawsuit between her and’s owner operator Hooman Karamian otherwise known as Nik Richie. Richie runs a gossip style website that posted a photo of Jones with then Bengals Kicker Shayne Graham. The photo was posted anonymously and the comments made about Jones were appalling at the time but intriguing now. She was alleged to have had a relationship with Graham and multiple other Bengals football players breaking numerous team rules. Another post claimed that her ex-boyfriend and high school sweetheart Nate cheated on her with over 50 girls in 4 years and gave her Chlamydia and Gonorrhea.

Jones claims that her life was adversely affected after the posts were displayed on Nik Richie’s website. She had to have her school block the website on the school’s network because so many students were accessing it. “I think I hit rock bottom when a student said she would never learn from a slut like me,” Jones told ABC in an interview with 20/20. “I literally broke down” Sarah explained that “I worked my butt off to make sure I had a clean, great reputation and then it was ruined by one post.” Well it was one post and a sexual assault allegation. Jones next court date in her libel suit is in June but her arraignment for the most current charges will take place early next week.
