Marquette tops Mount St. Mary’s in season opener

The Marquette Golden Eagles took care of business in the season opener on Friday night at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee.  On a night where some big name schools struggled with weaker opponent (cough cough Duke), Marquette ended up winning 91-37. Showing they are a balanced team, 6 different players ended up in double figures with Darius Johnson Odom leading the way with 16 points.

A few interesting notes from the game….

  • Everyone played, and played a lot.  Derrick Wilson logged the least amount of minutes with 16 minutes.  Junior Cadougan and Jae Crowder each played a team high 24 minutes.
  • Buzz loves the 5 player line switch, as he did it multiple times in the night, including in the 1st 5 minutes
  • Davante Gardner played well, but didn’t seem to have the same flare as he did last year.  Not worried as he is still developing, but I was just surprised
  • Jamail Jones, yes I said Jamail Jones had a highlight reel dunk which propelled him to 10 points, although he was 0-4 from 3.
  • DJO (16), Crowder (14), and Otule (14) all looked solid and ready to play this year.
  • Vander Blue played a good game defensively and contributed 10 points as well.   Got to the rim on his 10 points and missed his only jumper of the night.  4 steals and 4 assists also showed he deserves all the minutes he got, including starting
  • Junior Cadougan had a double double with 10 points and 10 assists.  To be honest, I am most surprised by the 10  points than I am the 10 assists.
  • Jamil Wilson played OK, but I guess was disappointed.  After hearing all summer that Jamil had been tearing up practices, I was really hoping to be blown away.  I guess he has a lot of time still to wow me.
  • The last thing to be concerned about was the poor shooting from 3 point range.  It’s early and we didn’t need it but 21 % isn’t going to cut it.
Overall Marquette took care of business while being able to get all their players some good playing time.  The team will need to cleanup some aspects of their game over the course of the next month before facing the Badgers, but I couldn’t really ask for more.
